Cube Map Experiments – Feedback needed!

Hi guys.

6e66o did some experiments with the cube map and he tested it with a beta version of our mod, too. So now we’re a bit unsure what to do. Add it to our mod or not? If we add it, we have to adjust the alpha layers of all of our textures and we don’t know if the community like it or not. So again your opinion is needed. I think all of you now know how the mod looks like so i only link to the pictures from the edited version with the new cubemap by 6e66o.

  1. Screenshots look great, but on the other hand the question would be that how much time would this whole adjusting take? I think if even with this modification you would manage to finish the mod this year, then yeah, go for it!
But on the other hand driving a 2006 mod in 2009 would be a bit funny, not judging, obviously your hand are full, but since you are trying to give an idea of F1 to us then it would be good of this would be up to date.
    Pics look fab, great work!
Go with which ever solution is faster and anyway atleast you could have things to do on your 2007 mod 😉

  2. Hi All,

In my opinion it’s an spectacular graphics improvement. Lighting it’s more alive, more impressive, and more real for me. It remembers to me to GT5 lighting. I vote to keep this new cube Map into final release.

    Thanks for your awesome job.

  3. I have mixed feelings about the effect;

The Ferrari looks very good; comparing it to the standard map, where I think the car looks a little ‘flat’ or limited in terms of lighting contrast; the highlights are more defined than with the standard map, in a similar sense to how HDR would appear, but less obtrusive.

Having said that, 6e66o’s map seems prone to appearing too ‘plasticy’, and the cube map seems to give cars a halo effect around the edges of the model (if you get me?), which doesn’t look entirely realistic. The onboard Toro Rosso and Red Bull shots have this problem, but the problem isn’t as apparent as it is with some of 6e66o’s other test examples from over the last few days, so perhaps he is still refining it. The McLaren doesn’t work as well with the new cube map; the chrome effect is dulled down and it looks more like the mp4-22.

It’s a difficult call; I certainly think the effect could be improved from where it is now, as it seems to not work more often than it does work. And without seeing it in motion, or at least more images (this is not a ploy to get you to post more images by the way) I can’t really say. I also want to point out with at least your 07 BMW Sauber I was always impressed with the lighting. Either way, if in doubt, provide both options; is the cube map in a single file?

  4. These screens are great! I hope you add it! I think it’s worth waiting for it. But the question for me is, how much time will be needed to add this awesome feature? I mean, I’m waiting since march or february and many poeple are waiting longer than me..so I just have to evaluate.. 😉

2-4 Weeks: Yes Sir, just do it!

2-4 months: Do it, but in your 2007 Mod. 😉

So that’s my unnecessary opinion. 😛

  5. Oops, ignore the last sentence in my post Neidryder, I just read your post properly and it sounds like it’s more complicated than simply providing a single alternative file to people. It would be great to have both options, but that may not be realistic. You (CTDP) are in a better position than us to judge the effect anyway, so it’s your call. I don’t think we can really see enough to effectively judge from those images.

  6. This effect is simply amazing.
But it doesn’t work for me on every ctdp 2006 car.
The Mclaren looks much better without this effect, the other cars look much better with the new cube map.

Add it ? definitely yes! But just on the cars where the effect is working.Like STR,Ferrari,REDBULL … and so on ….

  7. New cube map looks great, But would hate to wait for your mod even longer. Alpha channels would take awhile but if the end product would be that much better than would be worth the wait. Or new cube maps could be a later patch ?

  8. It would be nice to know how much you will need to include this in the final version cause the mod is great and with this it will be even better.
I vote pro cubes if it comes this year.

  9. we waited so long
2 weeks more dosnt matter anymore :)(or how long it will take)

looks not bad, ferrari is just awesome
    im with 658
best way is to include both in your launcher
like the u guys made it with the sounds
that we can switch between them

  10. The change of the cube map as Andy(Neidryder) says will not delay the mod infact i’m about half way done with incorporating the cube map anyways and i only got it yesterday 🙂

  11. hi everybody!
im glad you like it so far.

    As acido said,
it doesnt fit to every car,
but on those who does, it looks pretty good.

Im sure CTDP & the community will make the right decision after some testing 🙂

    cheers!

  12. Look’s amazing!
It would be great if you include the cube map.

BTW Kimi’s Monac helmet look’s absolute perfect.

  13. When u look at the Ferrari Pics i wa sliek is this even rFactor it looks like Gt5P and almost exacly real if you iclude it then this mod will be breathe taking ( i just hope my comp an run it :P)

  14. Hi all and thanks for the whole mods,

Maybe, you could release a patch along with the mod, and the patch could have an uninstall feature ?

  15. Like most people said, delay or not, these cube maps should be implemented where appropriate as the effect is simply stunning. Whoever was responsible for implementing the driver arms in LMT 2008 should also have a word with Afborro! 😉

  16. It looks good on the Ferrari, but the Red Bull at Montreal (I think it was, i closed the picture off several minutes ago) looks pretty average. Maybe if you can edit the skins so that they are on the standard of what the Ferrari looks like under the settings, it would be worthwile. If this is as far as you can go with it realistically, then there’s probably no point.

  17. My game did froze couple times when i used 6e66o`s cubemap plugin in Ctdp 2005. It did look alot better thought. 🙂

  18. @ f15active – As we have said before the driver arms used in other mods are simply attached to the steering wheel and no dynamic in there movement in any way.

  19. I would go for it: Red Bull and Toro Rosso shine a bit too much, imo, but with some little tweak it can prabably be “fixed”. Ferrari, instead, is simply amazing with this cubemap: whay don’t you try to fix a couple of cars (for example the ones we car already see in the screens) and then show us a previews, with proper alpha layers? In that way we can make a comparison and give a better response! 😉

  20. New cube map looks great. I’ve tried in the CTDP 05 mod and it looks real good, but I think it should be optional, some people won’t like it.

  21. Okay, I’ve just downloaded 6e66o’s ‘Cubemaps 1.00’ and tested it out. I just want to reiterate my initial impression that the effect, more often than not, feels too heavy handed and off-putting. From certain angles and on certain cars it looks excellent, as we’ve seen in some of the screenshots. However, more often than not it’s as if there’s three inches of wax on the cars, and whilst highlights benefit from the higher contrast, those highlights are often in the wrong place, making it look like the car has been plastic wrapped. All I’m saying is if you (CTDP) choose to go with this map: apply it subtly.

  22. second that.
If it would be used, it should be used for the cars that fit & with adapted alpha channels (maybe not to bright).

But im sure some people will complain anyway,
so i think the best way would be to offer this as an alternative.
If thats not possible, maybe you shouldnt use it.
People can still add it themselves, if they want to.

  23. but some people don’t know how to add it themselves or are just too lazy to do it. i think an (un-)installer would be the best solution. if you want to use it, run the installer, if you dont like it anymore, run the uninstaller. don’t know if that’s possible…

  24. Absolutely amazing!!
I don’t know how the Fps performance is with the cubeMap, but anyway I’d like you to include it in the mod. Although if it is possible, I think the best solution is to do it optional.

  25. yeah an unintallerwould be good if soem somputers cant handle it. I man i have been waiting since this mod was started and if This cube maps donst work on my computr i have just got my hopes up for nothing.

  26. Sorry to say this but cars look bit unrealistic with it. Especially that F2008 on same site with new cubemap.. I don’t like it

  27. Just release the mod, and who wants the cubemap thing, will do it themsleves….just concentrate on releasing it….plz…..

  28. I’m with 658 and Pascal, include a normal option and the improved cube map option. That would be the easiest way I think.

@ Matthew, they just just said that it won’t impede the release date of the mod anyway

  29. @ Matthew were pretty much done with the graphical side of the mod just waiting on physics now so us graphical guys get a little bored and start picking hole in it 😛

  30. I reflect what 658 said.

Some of the models – Toro Rosso and Red Bull look quite plasticy, and in my opinion, less realistic.

I just can’t wait to get my hands on this mod, and I’d rather this was released as a patch/update to the mod, or even an option.

  31. Ich spiele seit einigen Jahren nur Ctdp Mods und muss mal sagen wie super eure Arbeit ist! Die Qualität ist unglaublich! Weitre so und die Pics sehen toll aus!
