Another two days …

Another two days spent bugfixing. So far there haven’t been major reports, but many of the seemingly insignificant things can turn out quite nast. Like one Williams-frontwing, which had the wrong logo on some GPs, sounds simple, but required a new upgrade, remapping, new shadows, slightly changed texture, which due to yours truly needed to be saved twice. But hey, it looks great now. 🙂

We have our Bugtracker, and we are working through everything, Andy and me fixed 10 bugs in the last 2 days. Afborro is working on some last polish in the showroom. I get organising for the release done. Whata and me will doe some work on the manual. Something nobody else wants to do actually. So we threw dices and picked the people with the least time on their hands. That’s how it works, we don’t complain enough.

Enjoy the last weeks, before the mods is released. I tell you, you are going to miss waiting for it.

Clichees are great!

Thanks Andy for this nice piece of work clichees.

A 2D Artist, a 3D Artist and a Project Manager are having lunch. Something in the manager’s salad beginns to move. Nervous and obviously disgusted, he pulls a shacky cocoon from the salad. The 2D Artist beats it with his spoon, the 3D Artist with his knife untill, finally the cocoon opens up and a fairy with butterfly-wings gets out.

“Thanks for freeing me” she said. “For this, each shall ‘ave  a wish.”

The 2D Artist imidiately asks for his “own island in the carabbean” and “never having to work again”. The fairy agrees and the 2D Artist vanishes.

The 3D Artists thinks for a minute and wishes to “become Production Supervisor at ILM, this would be nice!”. The fairy agrees and the 3D Artist vanishes.

The project manager looks at the fairy and thinks. Finally he just sais “Well, actually, I have nothing to wish for, but it would be cool, if both of them were back on time for the afternoon meeting.”

Yes, we have come down to telling jokes here! We just have to explain, what the everyday problems, developing a mod are. 🙂

House cleaning

One job has to be done every now and then. Now I don’t mean this little bit of project management and the regular question “what are you dooooing?” and “any news?”. I mean the job of working through the repositories and cleaning up the mess that collects over time. We have 15 gb of source material: texture, models, all this stuff. However this cleaning up is actually fun, because working through the archives, the old sources, brings up memories …

Distribution methods

Ok, this one is half-official, half-personal interest.

For some time I was looking for good decentralised encrypted online storage provider. About 2 weeks ago, I finally found a system, that met my expectations and it opened up even some new possibilites. Namely a possible new way for file distribution. I don’t want to advertise the system, however I’d like to get some feedback if this approach makes sense to pursue and how it would work for you.

Anyway, we won’t rely on just one technique for the upcoming release, but try to balance the load on several servers and severals technical solutions.

Waiting preparation kit.

Thanks to w4llsb4lls for this idea.

A waiting preparation kit. Something like a survival kit, to ease the pain waiting for the mod. But after a short brainstorm with Andy, I got no idea, what this kit should actually include except the mod itself.

So I ask here, what would make it easier for you to wait? Anything we haven’t thought of yet? 🙂

It’s wrong, who cares?

At Motorsport-Total.com is a german preview about the new Codemaster’s F1-Game. The text as usual is from Speedmaniacs.de however the editors felt, the illustrations where to weak and they decided to tune it up a little. So they added an image of our F1-2006 mod (including copyright notice) and put it right next to the article. The caption didn’t match but whatever … they tought. We contacted them and they explained, that since there are no pictures of the new Codemaster’s game they used “screenshots of the new F1-2006 modification by team CDTP” followed by an apology for insecuring “us” as in the reader about the source of the screenshots. They obviously have no idea who it was asking, nor do they see how much care they are showing off. This is low-level journalism, but at least it’s entertaining seeing companies and magazins, who should know there stuff doing bullshit.

I remember back in 2001, Giga had a GrandPrix4-preview, which they illustrated with a screenshot of my RaceCar-fantasy-car from GrandPrix3.

Personally I only laugh at such incompetence, but if I wouldn’t laugh, I could easily get insulted and angry at such blatent ignorance.
Point with your finger and laugh at them. 🙂

Status

Hi guys,

There was some silance the past few days. I’m sorry but there is not much to show atm. I did some tweaks on the shaders and cleaned up everything so that we have a smaller mod and less ingame resources used. The safety car is in a good state and shaun is already painting it. It’s already ingame but pretty rude atm so we won’t show it for now. I hope i can finish off the car itself tomorrow. The lightbar on the car is another story. Alex is working on a small surprise for the spinner and Arioch,Gonzo and Speed are working on the physics.

So that’s it for now.
